Gabe's Weekly Perspective

The SK Hynix IPO was the most interesting event of the week to me — not just as a market event, but as a signal. When one of the world's largest memory chip makers decides to list in the U.S. and draws that kind of institutional interest, it tells you something about where capital wants to be: in the AI infrastructure stack, and in the memory companies feeding it. The irony is that Micron and Western Digital both sold off on the week — likely some rotation and profit-taking after strong runs. That's not necessarily a bad thing. The AI memory theme is intact; the market is just sorting out valuations. On the macro side, I'm watching the Iran situation closely. It hasn't boiled over, but a fragile peace deal is still a fragile peace deal — and oil markets know it. Treasuries selling off is the other thread worth following: higher yields for longer means the valuation math on growth stocks stays under pressure, even in weeks when those stocks go up. Diversification continues to be an important consideration for many investors.

What Moved Markets Last Week

Meta Surges on AI Infrastructure Memo

The headline story was Meta, which surged +12.5% on the week after an internal memo leaked detailing the company's hyper-efficient AI infrastructure buildout. The market loved what it saw: Meta is planning 14 gigawatts of compute capacity at below-average costs, set to manufacture its custom "Iris" AI chips starting in September, and launching new AI tools including Muse Spark 1.1. This was not just an AI hype story — it was an AI efficiency story, and Wall Street rewarded it accordingly. Nvidia added +8.5% in sympathy, reinforcing that the data center buildout cycle remains the dominant investment theme of this market.

SK Hynix IPO — The Memory Market in Focus

The biggest IPO event of the week was SK Hynix's U.S. listing, putting the global memory market squarely in the spotlight. SK Hynix is one of the world's largest producers of HBM (high-bandwidth memory) — the chips powering AI accelerators — and the offering drew significant attention from institutional investors. Meanwhile, existing memory names pulled back: Micron (MU) dropped -5.1% and Western Digital (WDC) slid -2.6% on the week. Some of that is likely rotation and valuation pressure after a strong run — not a fundamental shift — but it's worth watching how MU and WDC trade heading into earnings season.

Iran Peace Deal — Fragile and in Focus

Geopolitical risk quietly crept back into the conversation last week. The ceasefire framework between Iran and regional partners showed fresh signs of strain. No deal has collapsed, but the diplomatic window is narrowing and the language from both sides has turned harder. Energy markets are watching closely, and any escalation could move oil prices quickly — which feeds directly into inflation expectations and Federal Reserve posture. For now it's a background risk, but one worth keeping on the radar.

Treasuries Selling Off — Rates Moving Higher

Long bonds had a tough week. TLT (20+ Year Treasury ETF) fell -1.1% and intermediate bonds also softened, pushing yields higher across the curve. The bond market is repricing the "higher for longer" reality — resilient economic data continues to give the Fed cover to hold rates where they are, and any geopolitical flare-up in the Middle East only adds to the inflation uncertainty. For income-oriented investors, rising yields are a double-edged sword: existing bond prices fall, but new money earns more. We continue to favor shorter duration and floating-rate exposure in this environment.

A Personal Note

Some of you know I'm a big movie buff, so I'd be remiss not to mention the passing of Sam Neill this week. Jurassic Park is one of those films that holds a permanent place in so many of our hearts — the kind of movie you never forget seeing for the first time. But my personal favorite of his is Event Horizon, the 1997 sci-fi horror film that doesn't get nearly enough credit. Sam Neill brought something genuinely unsettling to that role, and it stuck with me. A true legend of cinema. He will be missed.
